Hemchandra Barua


Hemchandra Baruah (Assamese: Hemchandir Baruja; Hemsondro Boruva), a famous writer of Assamese language in the 19th century. Baruah was the compilation of the first Assamese dictionary 'Hemkosh', which was based on Sanskrit spelling based on the etymology. In fact Hemkosh was the second dictionary of Assamese language, the compilation of the first Assamese dictionary was done by an American Baptist missionary Dr. Miles Bronson, and it was published in 1867, but this dictionary lacked word etymology.
