The pre-credits sequence takes place in Manhattan in the 1930s, where private detective Sam Garner is hired by Mr. Grayle to investigate statues that move in the Winter Quay apartments. Garner finds an elderly version of himself in an apartment, dying and is chased by a tearful angel to the rooftop, where he faces a menacing Statue of Liberty. In 2012, Doctor, Amy and Rory enjoy a picnic in Central Park. The Doctor reads a pulp novel to Amy about a detective named Melody Malone when Rory leaves them to buy coffee. The Doctor continues reading and starts the last page of the book because he hates the endings. As he reads, the Doctor discovers that Rory appears in the novel. Meanwhile, Rory has been sent back in time to the 1930s by a tearful angel cherub. When he arrives, he meets River Song and both are immediately abducted by Mr. Grayle's followers. River reveals he is Melody Malone, and asks Rory how he got there. Rory is not sure and River tells him that he could not have arrived at the TARDIS because New York is being subjected to unusual time distortions that would prevent the TARDIS from landing. Amy begins to flip through advanced pages of Melody Malone's book but the Doctor stops her, alerting her that whatever she reads in the book is bound to happen and can not be changed. The Doctor and Amy try to go back in time to rescue Rory but the TARDIS collides with the distortion and sends them back to a graveyard in 2012.
Mr. Grayle holds Rory in his dark basement with cherub angels and only a matchbox for protection. River is taken to his office, where it is seen that Grayle maintains a debilitated tearful Angel chained. Using its vortex manipulator, River coordinates with the Doctor to establish a directional beacon that allows the TARDIS to land. Grayle allows the tearful Angel to catch River's wrist so she can be interrogated. Deducting that River wrote the book of Malone Melody, Amy identifies the location of Rory with the titles of the chapters and the Doctor sends him to rescue it. The Doctor and River discover that the only way she gets rid of the angel is by breaking her wrist, something Amy read earlier in the book and is destined to happen. The Doctor reads the index of the book and becomes enraged when reading a chapter titled "The last goodbye of Amelia". The Doctor searches for Amy and discovers that the matches have been spent and Rory has disappeared. Realizing that an angel took Rory, Doctor and River use their scanner to determine their location.
In Winter Quay, Rory appears ahead in an apartment marked by his name when Doctor, Amy and River arrive. Inside, an old Rory stays in a bed and calls Amy before dying. The Doctor suggests that the building has been used by the Angels many times as a farm, leaving its victims to live their lives in solitude while feeding on their energy. Rory and Amy refuse to accept their fate, insisting that they can flee from the Angels forever. The Doctor and River agree, help distract the Angels and Amy and Rory arrive on the roof, where they meet with an angel in the form of the Statue of Liberty. Rory suggests another option: he jumps from the ceiling and dies, creating a paradox that poisons the Angels' food supply and destroys them. Instead of pushing him as he asks, Amy joins him and the
