Raj Chandra Bose (19 June 1901 - 31 October 1987) was an Indian American mathematician and statistician. He is famous for 'Design Theory' and 'Theory of Error Correcting Codes'. In the mathematical society, he got the title of RC Bose. Along with India, they also made their special identities in foreign countries. But they worked tirelessly to reach this respectable level.
Birth and education
He was born on 19th June, 1901 in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh. His father, Protop Chandra, was a senior doctor in Rohtak district of Haryana Rajya. Due to his father's job, he also went to Rohtak a few times and that is why he spent his childhood. From his childhood, he used to have a strong attachment to mathematics and used to attract the difficult questions of mathematics. Although his father was in a reputable business, it was said that RC's childhood was spent in a deep economic crisis.
They got their initial education in Rohtak only. After completing graduation, he took admission in the Hindu College of Delhi, and obtained MA degree in Applied Mathematics in 1925. After this he also worked as a mathematical teacher and introduced many students to the practicality of mathematics.
Meanwhile, he went to Calcutta where he met the famous mathematician Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Meeting them was not less than Bose's pleasure, because Shyamas Prasadji had collected a lot of books on mathematical subjects and had a library of his own. That is why Bose has got a treasure of mathematical knowledge. Having studied mathematical books several times by staying with Mukherjee. This led to a great increase in his mathematical knowledge and he went on acquiring more expertise in this subject.
Although Bose did an MA in Applied Mathematics in 1925, his interest in mathematics did not go down well, hence he got a master's degree in pure mathematics in 1927. After doing MA, they are looking for employment in many institutes and universities. But they did not get success anywhere. It did not come to waste time in searching for a job and he was studying this time in geometry. Carrier
He started his career in 1930 with the Ashutosh College of Kolkata, and he continued working as a lecturer in mathematics until 1934.
His career was written by geometry only. At this time, the position of Professor of Geometry in the "Indian Statistical Institute" was vacant. The institute's director was PC Mahalanobis, himself a famous scholar of statistics. He had the knowledge of Bose's qualifications.
So he appointed Bose immediately to work on the post of professor and started giving him every possible help. Bose worked as a Statistician here from 1934 to 1938. Bose had acquired a good knowledge of statistics as well as studying geometry here. Later, he worked as a lecturer in the University of Kolkata from 1938 to 1945. In 1945, he was made the Chairman of the Statistical Department at the University and remained in that position till 1949. In the United States
In this institute he got lot of proficiency in teaching and studying. They got the opportunity to go to the United States in 1949. Go there and take them to the University of North Carolina. Appointed post of Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics. In 1966 he was appointed as a Canon Professor and continued to work till 1971.
After working here, Bose began working as a professor of statistics and mathematics at the University of Colorado. Along with teaching work, he also used to take time for new research work and discoveries. During his research work, he proved the theory of the magical class of Switzerland mathematician Leonard Euler wrong. But the scope of his work was not limited to mathematics or statistics only. In the year 1980, he was made an emiritus professor of mathematics and statistics, which was an honor for him. He also continued his research in areas such as telecommunications.
They suggested to use the Devanagari language as code code instead of Latin and Greek for "Graceco-Latin Square". In addition, they suggested to use these codes in experiments related to sociology, medicine, biology, agriculture and other related sciences. Fellowships and membership of institutions
In the science world, RC Bose made its own separate place. Given his service in mathematics and statistics, many organizations of the world have given him his fellowship and membership. Become a member of the United States National Academy of Medical Sciences.
In addition, he was made a fellow of India's National Institute of Sciences. She was a Fellow of the International Statistical Institute, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, New York Academy of Sciences and the American Statistical Association. Awards and rewards
In the period from 1971 to 1980, Mr. Bose did a remarkable job at Colorado State University, for which he was awarded the US Supreme Scientific Award "National Medal of Science" in 1976. Also a member of the United States Science Academy was nominated. Indian Statistical Institute honored him with the honorary title of "Doctorate of Sciences" in 1974. He was awarded an honorary title of D-Lit by Shanti Niketan, West Bengal. http://www.indianetzone.com/43/raj_chandra_bose.htm
