Fantasy on "The Poacher", by Carl Maria von Weber, by Paul Taffanel

The Fantaisie sur "Le Freischütz" is a work of virtuous character for flute and piano composed by the French flute player Paul Taffanel in 1876 on well-known arias of the opera Der Freischütz of the German composer Carl Maria von Weber.

Commentary

This work is part of the most interpreted repertoire of flute and is considered as one of the best romantic pieces for that instrument. It begins with an introduction of the piano using the material of the recitative before the aria Durch die Wälder, durch die Auen. An Adagio begins with the melody of the aria that Agathe sings in a famous scene in the light of the moon, Leise, leise, fromme Weise. It ends with a theme with variations on Kommt ein schlanker Bursch gegangen, originally sung by the character of Aennchen. Other opera fantasies by Paul Taffanel
