The Spanish Royal Academy commissioned him to supervise most of his edition of Don Quixote de la Mancha in 1780, and on his front he put his historical praise with an analysis and critical judgment. He also supervised the preparation of the map of La Mancha that is included in this edition and was responsible for editing and annotating the works of Baroque poet Esteban Manuel de Villegas (Madrid: Sancha, 1774). His claim that Don Quixote was an epic poem was criticized by José Marchena in his Lessons in Moral Philosophy and Eloquence (1820), using the theses of Father Francisco de Isla to differentiate between epic and history.
