Maria Isabel Curubeto Godoy


María Isabel Curubeto Godoy (San Juan de la Frontera, 1904 - Buenos Aires, August 25, 1959) was an Argentine pianist and composer. Daughter of Sanjuaninos parents and musicians too, she was the fourth of ten brothers.

Her parents started her on the piano at age four. At the age of six he was offered a free exam at the Santa Cecilia Academy in the province of Cordoba. At the age of nine, he mastered the keyboard. As a child she discovered exceptional gifts to Puccini and Berutti. Puccini recommended him in writing, getting him a scholarship from the national government to study in Milan. He spent his time in Europe studying piano in Vienna with Leschetitzky, and in Rome with Sgambati. Nevertheless, it left its activity of concertista, to dedicate exclusively to the composition of sort operates. She was also a piano teacher at the University of La Plata.

Someone considered it, although not true, as the first woman in the world to compose an opera: the play "Pablo y Virginia", based on the novel by Bernardino de Saint Pierre and with the same title. It was released in 1946 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

Her condition as a woman prevented her from gaining prominence among composers like Liszt or Chopin. Work (selection)
