John Stuart, Earl of Buchan


John Stuart, Count of Buchan, (1381-17 August 1424): son of Robert Stuart, I Duke of Albany and his second wife, Muriella Keith. Inheritance, marriage and descent Engraving from the end of the s. XVIII in the castle of Chambord.

John inherited Buchan County after the death of his uncle Alexander Stuart, called the Wolf of Badenoch.

She married Isabel Douglas (1385-c.1451), daughter of Archibaldo Douglas, the Fourth Earl of Douglas. He had only one daughter, Margaret Stuart (before 1425-before 1461), who would marry George Seton. Military career Bust of the Count of Buchan.

He fought in the Hundred Years War. Victorious at the Battle of Beaugé, captured at the Battle of Cravant and exchanged, he was named Condestable of France in 1421.

Buchan was the first commander of the King's Guard, the oldest unit of French troops. Formed with a company of Scottish archers during the Hundred Years War, they acted as the king's personal guard.

John Stuart died at the Battle of Verneuil.
