Liesegang studied mathematics and physics in Cologne and Paris. He then held a professorship in business administration in Heidelberg. There he was founder and director of the Institute for Environmental Management (IUWA). He was also secretary of the eco-oriented business journal "UmweltWirtschaftsForum" (Springer-Verlag). His research interests were environmental management, production, operations research and strategic business planning. In 2007, his retirement was followed.
