Citadel of Ankara

The citadel of Ankara (Turkish Ankara Kalesi or Akkale) was built by the Hittites as a military garrison in today's capital of Turkey and is located on a 978 m high hill, which is located in the northern part of the present city center of Ankara.

Over the centuries the castle was used by different peoples and rich people. When in 278 BC, The Galatians appeared in Anatolia, they made Ankara their capital. During this time, the citadel was extended to two districts (inner and outer city). Only a few of the former twenty towers of the outskirts are now preserved. The walls of the inner city, on the other hand, are still well preserved. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Commons: Citadel of Ankara - collection of pictures, videos and audio files
