Channel (prison)

The Canaleta prison is located in the province of Ciego de Avila, Cuba. It is a high security prison and main penitentiary of the province that houses about 3000 inmates. Previously it consisted of 6 wooden barracks constructed in 1964, but with the increase of the population and the exacerbation of the communist laws, the government of Fidel Castro was forced to construct in 1975 a modern installation of three buildings and four plants fenced with two fences of 10 meters of height and a wall of cement of equal dimension. Outside the prison are the Ministry of the Interior workshops and a prefabricated cement plant ("Bachiplan") which supplies civil constructions with prison labor. Other prisons in the province are the Prison Morón (1500 inmates), and less rigor are the Farms Capote (300), Pitajones (250); Nádales "uno" (200); Nádales "two" (200); Palma Mocha (200); Column eight (50) and Majagua Farm (150). Most of the less rigorous prisoners work on sugarcane plantations in the civil construction and care of livestock.
