The Dark Cities

The dark cities (Les Cités obscures in French), is a series of fantastic thematic cartoons, created by the Belgian sketcher François Schuiten and the French scriptwriter Benoît Peeters in 1983 with Les murailles de Samaris (The walls of Samaris) and which continues to be published today, with the appearance of a dozen comic albums and as many related products, from illustrated books to fake documentaries on DVD.

The series unfolds in an imaginary continent located in a parallel world, in principle invisible to ours, in which a multitude of influences, from the Borgesian metaphysical surrealism to Jules Verne's literature (mainly his extraordinary trips) are mixed. The series highlights Schuiten's detailed architectural designs for the Dark Cities, which are for the most part reinterpretations or "dark" versions of royal cities, such as Brüsel in Brussels or Pâhry in Paris.
