Thalassophobia (from the Greek "thalassa" (sea) and φόβος, phobos, fear or phobia) is an intense and persistent fear of the ocean. The thalassophobia is a clinical phobia usually classified under specific phobias, (fear of something specific, as a "trigger" of panic.) The symptoms of thalassophobia are the same as any other specific phobia.

Although it is a clinical phobia, sometimes it is accompanied by anxiety disorders. In some cases anxiolytic medications may prescribe or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) may be indicated.

Although many people are nervous when on a boat, this phobia is not one of the most common. People with thalassophobia fear being in large bodies of water. A common case of fear of the ocean is sometimes "triggered" by fearing the thought or sight of any creature under the depth of any body of water, meaning that the phobia is not only directed toward the oceans. p>

Many people with this phobia fear what lies beneath them, mostly sea creatures. Causes

Specialists claim that the main causes of thalassophobia are the combination of external traumatic events as well as genetic factors.

In the case of the castaway, thalassophobia arises from the trauma of remaining adrift in the ocean for more than a year.
