On 20 December 1975, with a unanimous point victory over six rounds against his countryman Juan Barros, he successfully gave his professional team. In September 1977, he became World Champion of the WBA as he defeated Rafael Ortega's divided punisher. However, he lost the belt already in his first title defense on 15 April in the following year to Eusebio Pedroza by technical K.o. in round 13.
