Iliófago

Iliophagous animals feed on debris and sediment commonly found in water. These are fish that ingest microorganisms produced by the decomposition of matter, or also feed on the waste, or feces, of other animals. These fish include, for example, Prochilodus lineatus and other species of alluvial plains of the great South American rivers (including its tributaries): Atrato, Magdalena, Orinoco, Amazonas, Paraná. In fact, the trophic chains of these plains are based on debris bacteria, not on phytoplankton, as on other aquatic biotopes.
