Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG) (translated as Music throughout History and in the Present) is the largest German encyclopedia of music and is a source on Western music only comparable to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians in size and depth. It is published by Bärenreiter-Verlag of Kassel and J. B. Metzler of Stuttgart.

The first edition comprises 17 volumes, two of which are supplements and one, an index. The second and current edition (1994-2007) consists of a thematic encyclopedia in 10 volumes (counting the index) and a biographical encyclopedia in 17 volumes. An additional supplement was published in May 2008.
