Burgwall Lychen

p3w1

The Burgwall of Lychen, a town in the district of Uckermark in the north of Brandenburg, is the Burgstall of a Slavic castle, a Slavic Burgwall.

The ground monument is located northwest of the village on a peninsula at the Wurlsee. It is a circular plateau, which rises up to six meters opposite the surrounding areas. Wall remains are not available. The castle was probably only fortified with simpler palisades. The small size of the 60 to 70 meter diameter rather small castle grounds suggests that this castle represented a fortified nobility from the 10th to 12th century. The orientation of the peninsula to the north-east could also point to a cultic place, since Slavic sanctuaries were always oriented in this heavenly direction.
