IBM 1442

IBM 1442.

The IBM 1442 was an IBM card reader and puncher. It was used in the IBM 1440, IBM 1130, IBM 1800 and System / 360 computers. The 1442 could read up to 400 perforated cards per minute. The cards were punched and read from one column at a time, and accepted binary cards. You could even create "IBM Doilies" cards, which had all possible holes that could be made, punched. Few IBM computers could do this without permanent damage.

I had two hoppers or exit trays (pictured below left). It could be programmed to use the desired output tray, so it was possible to read the cards and separate them into two groups, so to speak. The cards were placed in the upper hopper, and on them was placed a plate; then the cards were taken from the hopper, read and deposited in the lower bins.

The base model, when punching cards, could not "print" the last card in the "virgin" card column.
