The 2006 MotoGP motorcycle championship began with great expectations for the arrival of the category of Dani Pedrosa, as Valentino Rossi had several seasons showing that no driver on the grid could shade him. However, the Italian champion had a performance with his Yamaha quite irregular throughout the season, so unlike other years, the world title was very open until the end of the season, between the aforementioned Valentino Rossi, the American Nicky Hayden, and the young Dani Pedrosa and Marco Melandri.

Finally the championship was decided in the last race, corresponding to the Gran Premio de la Comunidad Valenciana. In it they aspired to the title Hayden and Rossi, and the winner was finally the pilot of Kentucky, obtaining its first title of the world-wide championship. Hayden's victory also meant Honda's re-conquest of the world, which had been the dominant brand until Rossi's departure from Yamaha.
