Gerhard Schneider (* September 5, 1943 in Buchen) is a historian who has taught at the University of Hanover and at the Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg, as well as guest professorships at the University of Halle and at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His publications deal with the historical dichotomy, the contemporary history, the mentality history and the history of Lower Saxony. From 1985 to 1989, Schneider was chairman of the conference for historical diction.

Schneider has extensively studied the didactics and methodology for the use of written sources in history teaching and thus supported the source-oriented teaching of the last decades. This was connected with the devaluation of the traditional teachers' list. His book Successful Entry (1999) is extremely widespread in the training of history teachers.
