Suriname parliamentary elections of 2000


The Suriname Parliamentary Elections took place on May 25, 2000. The multi-ethnic opposition coalition led by Ronald Venetiaan won the victory with 47.5% of the votes and 33 seats, 2/3 required to govern with an absolute majority and elect president without the need for a coalition. On the other hand, the pro-democracy coalition that grouped the party of former dictator Desi Bouterse (NDP) got barely 15% and 10 seats posting to Rashied Doekhie. The alliance of President Jules Wijdenbosch (removed by acts of corruption) was in third place with 10% and 3 seats.

On July 19, Venetiaan was voted as the new president for the 2000-2005 period with 35 seats in favor and 16 against.

Participation was 72%. Results
