Scorable Marker


In genetic engineering, a gene is designated as a genetic marker, which, together with the gene of interest, is introduced into the altered organism in order to recognize individuals with a successful genetic modification. In contrast to selectable markers, such as antibiotic resistance, scorable markers are directly recognizable by the phenotype of the gene-modified organism, for example by causing a certain coloration. Example for a scorable marker in plants is the gene "uidA", which encodes the acidic hydrolase β-glucoronidase. This hydrolase enzymatically cleaves, for example, the dye X-Gluc to an insoluble blue CIBr indigo dye. This can be seen with the naked eye.
