Armenian National Academy of Sciences




The Armenian Academy of Sciences (armenian Հայաստանի Հանրապետության գիտությունների ազգային ակադեմիա) is the main body of the Republic of Armenia that conducts research and coordinates activities in the field of natural and social sciences. It also serves as a national language society for the Armenian language.

It was founded on 29 November 1943 in the Armenian Socialist Soviet Republic (East Armenia) as a branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. The central branch of the Academy of Sciences is located in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, although other branches also exist in Gjumri, Sewan, Goris, Wanadsor and Ghapan.

The Academy of Sciences was founded by several Armenian intellectuals including Joseph Orbeli, Stepan Malkhasyants, Awetik Issahakjan, Ivan Gevorkian and Viktor Amazaspovich Ambartsumian; Orbeli became the first president of the Academy.

From 1947 to 1993 the President of the Academy of Sciences was Professor Ambartsumyan, a full member of the Armenian and the Soviet Academy of Sciences. From 1993 to 2006, the President of the Academy of Academics was Fadey Sargsian. Since 2006 it is the academician Radik Martirosyan.

The branch in Aragazotn is researching astronomy at the Byurakan Observatory. A well-known member of the Academy is Raymond Haroutioun Kévorkian, a French-speaking Frenchman, a researcher on the genocide of the Armenians. Edit source text Edit sourcetext
