Education of the Christian prince

Education of the Christian prince (Institutio Principis Christiani) is a work belonging to the Renaissance genre called the mirror of princes, the original of Erasmus of Rotterdam. It is dedicated to the prince Carlos, future emperor Carlos V, and written in 1516, when the recipient was 16 years old and Tomás Moro finished his Utopia; only three years after Machiavelli wrote The Prince (which was not published until 1532).

Erasmus points out that teachers should have good disposition and impeccable morals, and that a good education should include all liberal arts. Like Quintilian, it is pronounced against corporal punishment for bad students. Insists that the student should be treated as an individual.

Part of the purpose of this work is to assure Erasmus his position as tutor of Carlos.
