Election of the 2007 Japan House of Councilors

Results of the elections.

The election of the House of Councilors, the upper house of the legislature in Japan, was held on July 29, 2007. It was the first time that Prime Minister Shinzō Abe would face an election. Originally this election would be held on July 22, but the ruling Liberal Democratic Party decided in mid-June to extend the session of the House for a week to end the legislative session; this action was criticized for the short time remaining to make the election.

The House of Counselors has 242 members and has a six-year term of office. Approximately half of these are elected every three years. The last election was held in 2004 when Abe's predecessor Junichiro Koizumi was serving as prime minister.

The Chamber ended its session number 166 on July 5, 2007, marking the unofficial start of the campaign. Officially it began on July 12.
