National Archives of Haiti

The Haitian national archives are responsible for the preservation of the documents produced by the Haitian central administration as well as the management of civil status. They were founded on 20 August 1860 under the presidency of Fabre Nicolas Geffrard, making it one of the oldest institutions in the country. They are placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Communication of Haiti and their operation is governed by Organic Law 26 of Thursday 20 March 1986. The headquarters of the archives is located in Port-au-Prince the capital. / p>

In the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the capital's archives building is one of the few public buildings in the capital that should not collapse. However, the public records kept by the departments whose buildings have collapsed are in danger. 70 to 80% of these archives were finally recovered under the rubble.
