In March 1879, Vincent Van Gogh evokes the house of 81 Rue de Petit Wasmes in Wasmes, now the rue Wilson in Colfontaine.

He arrived in the borinage in December 1879 when the evangelist Benjamin Vanderhaegen found him this dwelling belonging to a baker. The latter helped him in his career as an artist. It was in this house that he saw his companionship with the miners. At that time, he began his drawing essays and it was also from this place that he wrote many letters to his brother Theo. This correspondence is the source of information about his life and his works. In his letters, he describes with emotion abandoned and silent villages as well as his encounters with intelligent and courageous men.

On September 13, 1925, Elisabeth Duquesne-Van Gogh, one of her sisters, inaugurated a commemorative plaque on the front of the house bearing the following inscription: which is a text by Van Gogh. RenovationsChange the code

Since then, the house has been completely renovated, only the facade has been preserved. These renovation works were carried out thanks to patrons and students of the Lycée Provincial de Hornu-Colfontaine. As part of Mons 2015, the Center Culturel de Colfontaine runs this place of memory where you can find exhibition rooms, an artist's room and also a seminar room. The house Vincent Van Gogh is available free every weekend.

This house has been designed to best represent the life of Van Gogh. To do this, they created a room but also a table to represent the place where he could make speak his art.

Talking about art, there are pictures of Van Gogh's paintings depicting the life of the mine as a theme, but also paintings explaining his own life. Change the code
