Tert-Butyl Chloride

Tert-butyl chloride is a colorless organic liquid. It is weakly soluble in water, flammable and volatile. Its main use is to begin nucleophilic substitution reactions to produce different substances. When mixed with water, the chloride substituent, the large leaving group, is separated from the aliphatic chain, resulting in a tertiary carbocation which will eventually yield tert-butanol (2-hydroxy-2-methylpropane) with hydrochloric acid as the by-product. If a nucleophile other than water (eg ammonia) is found in the medium, it would replace the chloride (in this case an amine would form).
