Josep Vergés i Vallmajor


Josep Vergés i Vallmajor (Badalona, ​​1875 - San Vicente de Montalt, 1951) was a Spanish politician, mayor of the city of Badalona from April 12, 1910 to January 1, 1912. He militated in the Regionalist League .

He joined the mayor's office after the resignation of Leopold Botey Vila. Its mayoralty was marked by a period of crisis derived from the Tragic Week of 1909, the chronicles of the time explain that it stood out for its generosity with the people most needed, since the mayoralty assisted the basic maintenance to the neighbors who were left unprotected facilitating food and hospice.

His mandate was also marked by the wreck of two boats of the city in 1911, where eleven fishermen died. As a result of this accident, the mayor launched several solidarity actions with affected families, seeking widow's pensions for the wives of the fishermen and assistance to the children of the deceased.

The popularity of Verges was evident on the day he left the mayor's office, as the farewell act, as reported by the press at the time, looked like a funeral procession. The city nomeclator approved the dedication of a public space in memory of Josep Vergés in 2010.
