Matthew Stolper


Matthew Wolfgang Stolper is a professor of asiriology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. He obtained his B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) at Harvard University in 1965, his M.A. (Master of Arts) at the University of Michigan in 1967, and his Ph.D. in Michigan in 1974.

Much of Stolper's research focused on legal Babylonian texts from the Achaemenid era. He is currently working on the Persepolis Fortification Project, a project dedicated to the study of the Fortress Archive of Persepolis, a set of administrative documents written, mostly in the Elamite language.
