Cape Fear Indians

The Cape Fear Indians, were a small tribe of North Carolina Native Americans who lived on the Cape Fear River (now North Carolina Park).

His name for that region was Chicora. Of its towns, only one, Necoes, is known by its name. The settlers located Necoes about 20 miles from the mouth of the Cape Fear River in present-day Brunswick County, North Carolina.

It is estimated that the population of the tribe in 1600 was 1,000. In 1715, a colonial census records that they added 206.

Some Cape Fear Indians fought under Colonel John Barnwell against the Tuscarora in 1712.

The Cape Fear Indians were definitely defeated and left the area around 1725.
