Teofilacto Botaniates

Teofilacto Botaniates (Greek: Θεοφύλακτος Βοτανειάτης Theophylaktos Botaneiates) was a Byzantine general of the eleventh century and governor of Thessaloniki. In 1014 the Byzantine emperor Basil II invaded Bulgaria and reached the walls around the village of Klyuch (Kleidion in Greek). To distract his attention, the Bulgarian emperor Samuel sent a large army under Nestoritsa to Thessalonica. Botaniates and his son Miguel met with the Bulgarians and defeated them in the vicinity of the city, after which they joined the troops of Basilio. After the Byzantine victory in the later battle of Kleidion was sent with an army to clear the way to Thessaloniki. However on his way back to Basil's main camp, his army was ambushed by the Bulgarians of Gabriel Radomir and Botaniates was killed by the spear of Radomir.
