The piece begins with an adage tempo indication. The initial bars show strong dynamic contrasts: the forte of the first bar changes quickly to the piano of bar 2. The initial adage changes to andante eight bars later; at this point, the right hand begins to execute triangles of sixteenth notes, while the left moves on the right to interpret arpeggios ascending from sixteenth notes and then re-interprets a semiquaver with a point in its normal position.
