Titus Dugović or Tito Dugović (Hungarian: Titusz Dugovics, born 21 July 1456 in Belgrade) was a Serbian soldier who was stationed in Belgrade by the Ottomans at the time of the siege of Belgrade , After his death and the successful defense of Belgrade, he was elevated to the hero after the Ottoman defeat.

Belgrade was at the time under the command of János Hunyadi. From 4 to 22 July 1456 Sultan Mehmet II Belgrade besieged. After previous violent battles Ottoman troops attacked the city walls of Belgrade on 21 July 1456. A Janissary succeeded, as the legend tells, to climb a battle tower and hoist the Ottoman banner when he was thrown down at the same moment by the soldier Dugović. Dugović dug himself with the Ottoman flag-bearer and prevented the banner from being set up.

The heroic deed remained in the memory of the defenders of Belgrade in connection with the overthrow of the Ottomans. In 1859, at the time of the ongoing loss of power of the Ottoman Empire in South-Eastern Europe, the Hungarian painter Sándor Wagner attacked the legend and captured the scene of the fall of Dugović and the Ottoman flagship on oil

According to Titus Dugović, Josip Broz is said to have given his Tito title when the KPJ was banned in Yugoslavia. Edit sourcetext
