Dabbaba

A dabaiba is a fantastic being from Chorotega mythology. It is a camac (witch) that lives inside a volcano. She is described as a beautiful woman in some versions, old and wrinkled in others, who has red eyes on fire, and sharp teeth like those of a jaguar.

The Rincon de la Vieja volcano, in the Cordillera de Guanacaste, Costa Rica, bears this name for a legend that says that inside it inhabited a dabaida, which forced the aborigines of Nicoya to deliver offerings in beautiful pieces of ceramics. Legend has it that a priest who came from Nicaragua at the time of the war of the 56 threw a curse and that the witch is still there, drowning in the hot mud of the fumaroles that characterize this volcano.
