Yahya Kanu

Yahya Kanu (* Magburaka, Tonkolili, † 1992) was Colonel of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, Chairman of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) in Sierra Leone from April 30 to May 1, 1992. He was allegedly leader of the coup against President Joseph Saidu Momoh in April 1992. His role, however, remains unclear as he was actually a friend of Momoh and denied any connection to the soldiers involved in the coup. Canoe was arrested after a few days by his successor Valentine Strasser and imprisoned in the Pademba Road Prison.

Canoe and its troops were the backbone of the Civil War against the Revolutionary United Front of Foday Sankoh and Charles Taylor. Heads of State Sierra Leones
