Rocabarraigh

Rocabarraigh is a ghost island or a rock in Scottish Gaelic myths, in such mythology it is supposed to reappear before the end of the world. "When Rocabarra comes to him, the World is likely to be destroyed". (When Rocabarra returns, the world will be ruined) Description

The name of the mythical island is often confused with that of Rockall a real islet in the North Atlantic Ocean. For example when Martin Martin visited Saint Kilda in 1716, he has made to Rockoll, but not in relation to Rockall but to Rockabarra.

The name would originate in the Celtic languages, barraigh (bar-ey) quite common in Irish toponyms. Rock can come from goidelico- gaelico rocail whose meaning is breaking or roaring.
