Herman Ferdinandus Maria Münninghoff joined the religious order of the Franciscans and received priest ordination on 15 March 1953.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him Bishop of Djajapura on 6 May 1972. The Archbishop of Semarang Justinus Cardinal Darmojuwono gave him the bishop's ordination on the 10th September of that year; Co-conspirators were Herman Tilleman's MSC, Archbishop of Merauke, and Alphonsus Augustus Sowada OSC, Bishop of Agats.
