Old bishop

Alterzbisch is the name for a retired archbishop (eg for age or health reasons). Until 1971, a titular orbish bishopric (possibly per hac vice) was given instead of the previous archbishop's title. In 1971, however, those bishops, who had renounced their bishopric on their resignation, were asked to renounce this titular bishop's dignity. They were given the title archiepiscopus emeritus (senior bishop) with the addition of their former residence.

Exceptions existed only in those cases where a bishop on the occasion of his resignation was awarded the archbishop's title on a quasi-honorary basis (eg the former bishop of Graz-Seckau, Josef Schoiswohl, on the occasion of his resignation as titular archbishop pro illa vice of Monteverde).
