Jewhen Schtscherban

Jewhen Schtscherban

Jewhen Olexandrowytsch Schtscherban (Ukrainian Євген Олександрович Щербань; 18 January 1946 in Konstantinovka near Kharkiv, Ukrainian SSR; † 3 November 1996 in Donetsk) was a Ukrainian businessman and politician. He was a member of the Party Liberalna Partiya Ukrayiny and was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada in 1994.

Schtscherban and his wife and two technicians were murdered at the Donetsk airport on 3 November 1996 by persons dressed as police officers. Although eight prisoners were sentenced to prison terms in 2003, the background to the murder was never fully elucidated. In January 2013, the Ukrainian General Prosecutor's office named the former Prime Minister, Pawlo Lasarenko, as well as the former Prime Minister and later opposition leader, Yuliya Tymoshenko. Tymoshenko and her defender rejected the allegations as absurd and constructed, accusing them of the billionaire Rinat Achmetov and President Viktor Yanukovych to be involved in the murder of Schtscherban.
