Carnival (pastel)

Un fasnacht A fasnacht with sugar

A Fasnacht, sometimes written Fastnacht or Faschnacht, is a fat donut traditionally served on Fasnacht Day (Carnival Tuesday), the day before the beginning of Lent. They were made as a way to empty the pantry of pork, sugar, fat, and butter.

In parts of Maryland, they are called Kinklings, and are only sold in pastry shops on Tuesday of Carnival. The German version is made of yeast dough, fried, and coated or sprinkled with sugar or cinnamon; can be simple or stuffed with fruit jam.
