MSF time signal

MSF is the name of the official time transmitter of the United Kingdom. Also called NPL, short for National Physics Laboratory, the institution that maintains the official time of the country. It is located in Anthorn (Cumbria), near the border between England and Scotland. It transmits in the frequency of 60 kHz of 17Kw in low frequency. Its reception is perfect at all times in a circle of 1000 kilometers around the station, especially in Northern Europe and the central part of Western Europe, with a longer range at night. It is the hour time transmitter at zero meridian in Europe and has great popularity in Norway and Ireland, in addition to the UK.

Clocks ready to synchronize with broadcast stations that are sold to consumers in the UK are pre-programmed for this default transmitter and not for the DCF77. This makes them often not compatible with watches sold on the continent.
