Putna studied from 1924 to 1930 at the Czech Technical University of Brno near Jiří Kroha. After that, he gained experience in the design offices of Vladimír Fischer and Jindřich Kumpošt until 1935 before working as a freelance designer from 1936 onwards. From 1948 he was planning director at Stavoprojekt in Prostějov (branch offices in Munich). From 1951 to 1970, Putna was a lecturer at the Czech Technical University of Brno.
