Sai Setthathirath I. (auch Xai Xettatirat, Chai Chetthatirat; voller Thronname Somdet Brhat-Anya Chao Udaya Buvana Brhat Jaya Setha Maharajadiraja Buvanadi Adipati Sri Sadhana Kanayudha, * 24. Januar 1534 als Jaya Setha Varman (Setthavong); verschwand 1571 unter mysteriösen Umständen bei Mueang Ong-Kan) war zwischen 1548 und 1571 König von Lan Chang und Lan Na.

Sai Setthathirath was the son of King Phothisarath I and his wife, Queen Yudhi Karma Devi (Yot Kam Tip). He was educated at the court and crowned with the title of Maha Upayuvaraja. As king of Lan Na, he was chosen by the local nobility after the death of his maternal grandfather, where he was proclaimed king after his arrival in Chiang Mai on 18 June 1546. The coronation took place on 2 July of that year. He left Chiang Mai on August 8, 1548, after learning of his father's death in Luang Phrabang (Sawa). He brought the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaeo) to the capital of Lan Chang. There he accepted the declarations of loyalty of his brothers. In 1550 he was crowned king as Brhat Upayabudhana Buwana Brhat Jayadipada Sri Sadhana Kanayudha. But before that, a civil war broke out in Lan Na, and after three years Chaos thanked Lan Lan before May 21, 1551, in favor of Phra Nang Chiraprapha Mahadevi. The State Council, however, refused to agree to his election and chose another king. That is why Sai Setthathirat sent an army to Lan Na in 1555, could also conquer Chiang Saen, but further progress failed.

In 1560 Sai Setthathirat moved to the new capital, Vientiane, where he built the great Phat That Luang in 1568. In 1563, 1568 and 1569 he had to resist attacks from Bago, the Burmese power center of his time. He changed the name of the ancient capital, Lawa, to Luang Phrabang (the "Royal City of Brhat Bang").
