Juan Pedro Laclette


Juan Pedro Laclette San Román (Celaya, Guanajuato, February 17, 1953), Mexican biologist, Researcher at the UNAM. He is a PhD in Basic Biomedical Research by the UNAM and Master of Science in Biochemistry CINVESTAV of the IPN.

He completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship with the honorary appointment of Visiting Scientist at Harvard University's School of Public Health. He began his teaching career at UNAM, in the Faculty of Medicine in 1974, first as an assistant in the course of Biochemistry and later as Professor of Asignatura. He joined Associate Researcher "B" of T.C. at the Institute of Biomedical Research in 1981. He was Head of the Department of Immunology from 1991 to 1995 and Director of the Institute, appointed by the Governing Board of UNAM, for two periods (1999-2007). Since 2000 he has been Researcher "C" and since 1999 maintains the "D" level of PRIDE. He has been a national researcher since the founding of the National System of Researchers in 1984 and level III since 2003. Until October 2015, he has had an antiquity of 41 years at UNAM.

His academic and academic-administrative career also includes his position as Coordinator of the Postgraduate in Biomedical Sciences for two periods (1996-1998 and 1998-1999), appointed by Rectors José Sarukhán Kermez and Francisco Barnés de Castro, respectively. As well as positions of election as Vice-President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2004-2006), later occupying the Presidency of the same in the period 2006-2008. He was elected General Coordinator of the Scientific and Technological Advisory Forum for the period 2008-2010 and re-elected for a second term (2010-2012). He was also elected Co-Chair of the Inter-American Network of Academies of Science (IANAS) for the period 2007-2010 at the General Assembly of IANAS in Venezuela and re-elected for a second term 2010-2012 at the General Assembly held in Canada. He was elected President of the Mexican Society of Parasitology for the period 2003-2005. He has been ex officio member of the Board of Government of the National Institute of Pediatrics of the Secretary of Health and of the Board of Government of CONACYT. As of February 2014, he was appointed by the Rector of the UNAM, Dr. José Ramón Narro Robles, as Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies at UNAM.

In 2012 he was selected by the magazine Líderes Mexicanos to be included in the list of Mexico's 300 most influential leaders.

He has published four books and multiple articles in medical research journals around the world. Member of several medical academies, he has given courses of bachelor's and doctorate in the UNAM.

His specialization has been research on human and swine cysticercosis.
