Albrecht Haack
Albrecht Haack (born December 6, 1898 in southern Germany, died September 22, 1976 in Munich) was a German chemist. Haack studied chemistry and natural sciences at the University of Erlangen from 1919 to 1924 with a diploma in 1924, where he was promoted in 1926 by Otto Fischer (and Anton Vilsmeier). From 1928 to 1941 he was a business clerk at the Milchzentrale in Karlsruhe. From 1941 to 1945 he served military service and was then with the tax administration in Erlangen and Nuremberg and in other places (but they had nothing to do with chemistry). He retired in 1963.
The Vilsmeier-Haack reaction discovered by him, together with Anton Vilsmeier, bears his name for the formylation of aromatics with formamides and phosphorus oxychloride. According to Vilsmeier, however, this was only the elucidation of the synthesis method already found in his own dissertation.
