Klostergesetz

The Prussian law for the dissolution of the religious order was defined as the monastic law. It was published in the Prussian Official Gazette in June 1875 and was part of the Kulturkampf. It was executed on May 31, 1875, and proclaimed on June 3, 1875.

By the law of April 29, 1887, all orders except the Jesuit Order were re-admitted. Edit content source text

The law foresees that religious orders of the Catholic Church as well as religious-like congregations were excluded from the Prussian state. The establishment of new branches was forbidden and the admission of new members was prohibited from the day of the promulgation of the law (3 June 1875). Existing branches should be dissolved within six months.

An exception was provided for the orders devoted exclusively to nursing. They were able to survive, but their abolition was possible at any time by a royal decree. This law abolished 296 religious orders in Prussia. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Single-level Edit source text
