Sumitra Nandan Pant


Sumitranandan Pant (20 May 1900 - 28 December 1977) is one of the four pillars of shadowy era in Hindi literature. This era is called the age of poets like Jaishankar Prasad, Mahadevi Verma, Suryakant Tripathi, 'Nirala' and Ramkumar Verma. He was born in Bageshwar. Pant was born on May 20, 1900, in village Kausani, Almora district. His mother died only after six hours of birth. He was raised by his grandmother. His initial name was Gusai Dutt. They were the youngest of seven siblings. His early education took place in Almora. In 1918, he came to Kashi with his brother in law and started studying in Queens College. From there he passed the Secondary Examination and went to Allahabad. He did not like his name, so he kept his new name Sumitranandan Pant. Here at Mure College, he entered Barvi. During the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1921, he left the college on the call of Mahatma Gandhi's boycott of English schools, colleges, courts and other government offices, and studied Hindi, Sanskrit, Bangla and English language literature at home. Pant lecture mall is held every year in his memory in the museum. A book titled 'Sumitranandan Pant Personality and Creativity' has also been published from here.
