Hayashizaki Shigenobu


Hayashizaki Shigenobu (jap. 林 崎 重 信; * 1542 in Japan) was a samurai and the tradition of the founder of the Iaidō. His childhood name was Asano Tamijimaru (浅 野 民治 丸) and his reputation as an adult was Jinsuke (甚 助).

He lost his father early. In 1559 he prayed for the gods Hayashizaka myōjin (林 崎 明 神), in today's hamlet Hayashizaka of the city Murayama, which revealed to him the technique of rapid sword-drawing. This he called Battōjutsu (抜 刀 術). He then founded Shinmusō Hayashizaki-ryū (神 夢想 林 崎 流, "Hayashizaki School of the Divine Vision").
