Groclant

Groclant drawn west of Greenland, on a famous Abraham Ortelius map from 1572. Grocland or Grocland, name of a "ghost island" that was supposed to be located to the west of Greenland and that appears in diverse maps until ends of the XVI century.

The origin of this ghost island can be traced back to an erroneous reading of the name Greenland (Grønland in Danish, formerly Grnnland, sometimes abbreviated Groẽnland), and confusion with islands such as Baffin or others in the present-day Canadian region of Nunavut.

One of the first maps in which it appears is the one of Mercator of 1569 and one of the last one is the one of Quadus of 1608.
