Contribution to Language, Country and Ethnology


Bijdragen tot de Taal, country folklore ("Contributions to the language, countries and peoples", BTLV) is one of the oldest oriental magazines in the world, which since 1853 from the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Landen (KITLV, Royal Institute of Languages, National and Folklore), recently published under the name Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies. It is a scientific journal with contributions to Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Her main focus is on linguistics, anthropology and history, as well as book reviews in addition to articles by various authors. Originally, it had the title of Bijdragent tot de taal-, folkkunde van Nederlandsch-Indiƫ (ISSN 1383-5408) from 1853 to 1948. The founding of the magazine fell into a time when it became apparent that the Dutch colonies needed not only a strong army and well-trained officials to control them, but also the scientific and practical knowledge of local society.
